November has been the month of Movember, bringing a focus to men’s health. Find out how you can support the Movember Foundation.
The idea that sparked Movember was first born in 2003 by two mates. A Mo has the ability to start a conversation like no other and the founders of Movember have taken it from humble beginnings to a truly global movement that now sees support from over five million Mo Bros and Mo Sistas around the world.
The Movember Foundation tackles men’s health on a global scale by targeting the most prominent health issues faced by men: prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention.
The problem
On average, men die six years earlier than women. Globally, every minute, a man dies by suicide. In Australia, 75% of suicides are men. The rate of prostate cancer is set to double in the next 15 years, and the rate of testicular cancer has already doubled over the past 50 years.
This health crisis affects our partners, brothers, fathers and friends.
Movember is about focussing on men’s health in a bid to reduce the number of men dying needlessly each year with funds raised ($29M raised in 2018 in Australia) supporting innovative research for both global and local impact. By 2030, Movember expects to reduce the number of men dying prematurely by 25%.
Making a contribution
ACU is proud to promote Movember and bring attention to men’s health. Whilst the month of Movember is almost over, you still have an opportunity to contribute. Staff can make a donation to the Movember Foundation at any time of the year. Search for Team ACU. All donations are tax deductible.
