The Ally Network at Australian Catholic University is a visible network of staff who support the university’s pastoral commitment to providing a safe, inclusive and respectful environment for students and staff who identify as being lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex or queer, or as having any other sexuality or gender diverse identity (LGBTIQ+).

The Ally Network operates within the context of the mission and identity of ACU as a Catholic university, and as an expression of the university’s mission to act in truth and love, enhance human dignity and serve the common good.

About us

The Ally Network is not a political advocacy group within or for the university, but a practical expression of a vision for the human person in which all people – all genders, sexes and sexualities – are supported in their dignity.

Allies at ACU are not experts about matters of sexuality and gender identity. They are people from the ACU community who strongly support promoting equality and inclusion for staff and students who identify as LGBTIQ+, so everyone can safely work and study free of harassment or discrimination in an affirming environment.

ACU welcomes all people of goodwill in partnership as it works to bring about the Christian vision of the human person. The vision is foundational to the faith traditions and practices of the Catholic Church, in which the dignity of the human person leads to the flourishing of all peoples – regardless of creed, gender, gender identity or sexuality.

The ACU Ally Network aims to:

promote understanding and awareness of LGBTIQ+ issues that affect staff and students
promote and advance ACU’s commitment to providing a safe, inclusive and respectful place of work, learning and support for staff and students who identify as LGBTIQ+.

Ally Network Co-Convenors

Noah Riseman (he/him)

Noah is a professor of history in the School of Arts on the Melbourne Campus. He is a cisgender gay man who researches Australian histories of sexuality and gender.

Noah has conducted research projects on the history of LGBTIQ+ people in the Australian Defence Force and the history of trans and gender diverse people in Australia. He has long advocated for LGBTIQ+ inclusion both within ACU and externally, and he represents ACU at the Victorian Universities Ally Network. Noah has also worked with LGBTIQ+ groups including the Australian Queer Archives, Transgender Victoria, Discharged LGBTIQ+ Veterans Association, DEFGLIS (Defence LGBTI Information Service) and Melbourne Chargers.

Since 2019, he has also played for the Southern Lights: Melbourne and Australia’s first LGBTIQ+ and inclusive ice hockey team.

Jillian Cox (she/her)

Jill is the Administration and Research Officer for the Stakeholder Engaged Scholarship Unit (SESU), which oversees community-based research at ACU. She is a cisgender gay woman and a professional staff member with research interests.

Previously, she has worked in numerous research support, student support and teaching roles at Monash, the University of Divinity, RMIT and VU.

With a background in theology and history, her research has explored the intersections between theology and sexuality and theological hermeneutics. Her doctoral research examined Lutheran theological claims about homosexuality and in response, proposed a more life-giving theology of the human person and a revitalised hermeneutic, drawing upon Lutheran, Catholic and secular resources.

As a LGBTIQ person of faith Jill is passionate about supporting a safe and affirming environment for LGBTIQ+ students and staff at ACU.

Ally Network Members

The ACU Ally Network comprises staff who have completed LGBTIQ+ Ally Training and have chosen to formally join as members of the Ally Network.

We offer LGBTIQ+ Ally Training a few times each year. As staff members complete training and become members of the Ally Network, their names will be added to the table below.

In addition to the ACU Ally Network, there are several LGBTIQ+ student clubs and societies on ACU campuses.

Ballarat

The ACU Ballarat LGBTIQ+ Club is a supportive network of LGBTIQ+ students/staff/alumni and allies, that promotes inclusivity on the Aquinas (Ballarat) Campus. We host regular social events to ensure that LGBTIQ+ individuals feel included and connected within the ACU community. We offer a safe space for people of all sexualities and gender identities to feel that they can be themselves, and we support LGBTIQ+ students to engage with university life.
