Good project governance and oversight ensures that the right decisions are made and projects can be guided to success.

Simple projects are overseen by the Executive Sponsor directly through the project.

The three major stages of a medium or complex project:

  • When preparing a Project Business Case, the Executive Sponsor oversees the progress directly.
  • On approval of the business case, the Plan phase starts, and the Executive Sponsor convenes the project governance group (Project Board or Steering Committee). The group oversees the project until the end of its closure, i.e. approval of the Post-Implementation Review (PIR).
  • When embedding the outcome and realising the benefits, the Executive Sponsor oversees and reports on the progress directly.

The governance is scaled according to the complexity of the project. This is agreed between the Executive Sponsor and the Portfolio Projects Office (PPO) and is based on the Project Assessment results.

The roles and suggested Terms of Reference (ToR) are explained further in a guideline to ACU project governance.

Please note: Projects which use technology as part of the solution will also go through IT governance process. This covers especially IT reviews and capacity and TAG meetings.
