iThenticate is a web-based platform that compares text in uploaded documents with millions of items of existing scholarship and webpages to identify matching text. iThenticate forms part of the University's suite of support for research integrity. Journal editors, publishers, and thesis examiners often use iThenticate to delete and deter plagiarism and self-plagiarism. Researchers can also identify and address potential areas of concern in early writing processes by using iThenticate

Academic staff

To request access to iThenticate Academic staff must contact their Head of School or supervisor for approval and request the Head of School or supervisor to send an email to ithenticate@acu.edu.au to create the account.

  1. You will receive an email from noreply@ithenticate.com with a temporary password, your username is your ACU email address.
  2. Once you log in you will be prompted to enter a new password.  Please note that iThenticate passwords cannot contain special characters such as the period characters such as ("."). Also the iThenticate site is not integrated with the ACU network or LEO, therefore any changes to passwords will not occur in iThenticate. You will need to keep a record of this password elsewhere.

Post-graduate students (research)

iThenticate is also available to post-graduate students involved in research. In order for an iThenticate to be created post-graduate students must contact their supervisor for approval and request the supervisor or course co-coordinator to send an emait to ithenticate@acu.edu.au to request an account is created..

An email from noreply@ithenticate.com will provide a temporary password, username to your ACU email address.

Using iThenticate can help you:
  • avoid inadvertent plagiarism
  • prevent copyright issues from excessive use of your own or others’ text
  • comply with the Australian Code for Responsible Conduct of Research (2007)
  • develop personal judgment about acceptable practices of academic integrity.
iThenticate does not:
  • match diagrams and tables
  • match images.

iThenticate does not save a copy of any file which is scanned to a database of sources (unlike Turnitin, similar software used in undergraduate teaching). It protects intellectual property while allowing researchers to identify errors in citation and attribution.
