H5P enables you to create and add dynamic content to your units, such as interactive videos, presentations, games, quizzes and more.

To learn about which H5P content types would suit your needs, see the H5P Selector.

You can use the H5P activity type to add a link to content you create in H5P. This can be content you've made previously, or you can create new content when adding a link using the method describe below.

Your new H5P activity will now be available as a link in your LEO unit.

Note: you can only add a piece of H5P content once in your unit, however you can add multiple H5P activities to link to several different pieces of content.

How to embed H5P content

You can embed a H5P activity inside LEO content using the Text Editor, such as in a Page, Book, Lesson or Label.

To embed the content you need to make it public – this is not as scary as it sounds as all the ACU H5P content is restricted so that it only appears on ACU domains such as leo.acu.edu.au.

Follow the instructions above for How to add H5P content to your unit, but in step 5, instead of Insert:

  1. Access the Publishing Content menu by clicking on the publish icon or selecting Publish from the drop down menu accessed by clicking on the three dots at the right of the H5P content.
    H5P select for embed

  2. In the Publishing content screen:
    1. Choose Public – this gives you the option of sharing via link or choosing embed.
    2. Choose Embed.
    3. Click inside the embed code box which will copy the HTML code.
H5P make public and copy code

  3. Go to the label/book/page/lesson activity where you wish to embed the H5P content, using the HTML editing option in the LEO Text Editor, paste the embed code.

How to use the authoring tools in H5P

H5P tutorial button

When you create new content in H5P you are able to select from a wide range of authoring tools.

If you need help using these tools, you can click the Tutorial button when editing the content settings (see image right).

You can also see a working example of the content type by clicking the Example button.

If you have previously used H5P either as a free or paid user, you can export your content from your existing H5P account and import it when creating H5P content in LEO.

For instructions on how import your content, please see the H5P Exporting and Importing guide.

Note: you cannot access content from external H5P accounts through LEO.

After selecting your content, you may wish to modify how this content is accessed by students, and how it is displayed in your LEO unit.

How to change how H5P content is displayed to students

Under the General heading, click the Show more... link to view the additional activity settings:

  • Activity Description
Enter some text in the Activity description text box and check the Display description on unit page option to show this text under the link to the activity in the unit. This can provide some additional contextual information to students before they open the link to the content.
  • Launch Container
This setting determines how the H5P content opens when a student clicks the link. These options are:
    • Embed - The tool is displayed embedded on the page (this is also the Default display mode).
    • Embed, without blocks - This embeds the content but also removes the blocks on the right side of the page (increases max width of content).
    • New window - The tool opens in a new browser tab or window.

Important note: you should NOT change the Preconfigured tool, Custom parameters, Icon URL or Secure icon URL fields, as these may negatively affect the functionality of your H5P content link.

How to show or hide activity grades in the unit

By default, grades that are given by H5P activities are displayed in the unit's Gradebook. You can disable this if you wish:

  1. Edit the settings for the H5P activity.
  2. Expand the Privacy section of the activity settings page.
  3. Uncheck the Accept grades from the tool option.
  4. Click the Save and return to unit button.

If you have used H5P in the past, or are familiar with the various content types available, but do not see the content type available in LEO, it may be because not all H5P content types meet Web Accessibility guidelines, and those that do not meet the minimum standards for ACU are not enabled for use in LEO.

Our work is guided by the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (DDA) and Disability Standards for Education 2005. We value equity, diversity, accessibility, wellbeing and sustainability. In light of these, Web Accessibility has been a key requirement in implementing H5P at ACU.

For further information on the status of these tools in regards to accessibility, please see H5P Recommendations and overview of content types.

Note: The Crossword content type is available and accessible, but may not function correctly in all browsers. If users encounter an issue with this type, it is recommended to try another browser.

If you are creating content, please be aware of your copyright obligations regarding use of text, images and sounds created by others. If you're using images, for example, ensure you have the rights to do so. Once you use such media elements as part of any content you create, not having the proper rights to use them will constitute a breach of copyright.
