1. Navigate to your unit from within LEO.
  2. Click Turn editing on.
  3. Scroll down to the section in your LEO site where you would like to add the Book, then click on Add an activity or resource.
  4. Select the Book option from the available resources:
The book resource in the activity picker
  5. On the settings page, give your Book a Name. It is also useful to enter text in the Description text box, so that your students know what the Book is about, or the reason they are being asked to interact with it. Click on the box next to Display description on unit page if you would like the description to be visible from the main page of your LEO unit.
  6. Once you have selected your settings as appropriate, click on Save and return to unit to return to the main page of your LEO Unit, or Save and display to start adding content (in the form of chapters) to your Book.

To learn more about the settings which are specific to the Book activity, click on the Other Book settings heading below.

Appearance

There are a few settings which are unique to the Book within LEO. The settings you select will alter your Book's appearance. These are explored in length below. These settings can be found under the 'Appearance' heading on the settings page of your Book.

Chapter formatting

The setting you select from this dropdown will dictate how the table of contents in your Book will be formatted. The options are:

None - Chapter and subchapter headings will have no formatting

Numbers - Chapters and subchapter titles will be numbered (1, 1.1, 1.2 etc)

Bullets - Subchapters will be indented, and displayed with bullet points in the table of contents

Indented - Subchapters will be indented within the table of contents

Style of navigation

The setting you select from this dropdown will dictate the style of navigation for your book. The 'style of navigation' refers to how users will be able to sequentially navigate through your book. The options are:

TOC Only - Only the table of contents will be displayed

Images - users will be able to navigate through your Book by clicking on left and right 'arrow' images

Text - users will be able to navigate through your Book by clicking on text, which include the name of the next and previous chapter titles.

Custom titles

By default, the chapter title is displayed in the table of contents (TOC), and additionally as a heading above the content.

If the custom titles checkbox is ticked, the chapter title will not be displayed as a heading above the content. You can instead choose to enter an alternative chapter title.

The Book resource is useful for presenting interactive information to your students in a linear, 'book-like' format.

If you are looking to present information to your students in a less-linear, more interactive 'choose your own adventure' way then we suggest you think about using the Lesson activity. At its most basic, a Lesson activity can be used to present content in a linear fashion; the student progressing through the content by clicking a ‘continue’ button at the bottom of the page. Used to its full capacity, the Lesson activity can be used to create an adaptive learning experience where, depending on the student's choice of answer, students may progress to the next page, be taken back to a previous page or redirected down a different path entirely.

To Learn more about the Lesson activity, please read our LEO Guide: Lesson
