ACU Engagement Update:
The ‘Active Together’ program offers students in Brisbane access to a variety of engaging activities on campus each week, encouraging socialisation between international and domestic students.
Supported by ACU partners, ACU Sport, and ACU International, ‘Active Together’ aims to help international students develop friendships, improve their English language skills and enhance their wellbeing. The Program runs for 8 weeks in 1st and 2nd semester each year, and continues to provide a platform for international students to engage with others and share their social and cultural interests.
Tremendous support for the Program was provided by Kate D’Orazio and Michelle Miles from the International Office, encouraging international student attendance and helping to facilitate the weekly events. Key to the success of the program this semester, however, was the professionalism, passion and dedication of Social Work students, Hilda Gleeson, Tegan Bell and Alesha Shanahan, who coordinated the program this semester as part of their SWTP316 community engagement placement.
Provided with a Handbook for guidance, and supported by ACU Engagement and the International Office, Hilda, Tegan, and Alesha worked as a team to deliver the weekly activities which included volleyball, giant games, music, making and indulging in delicious hand-made dumplings to celebrate the Hindu Teej Festival, and the popular Nepali dance activities, with students dancing up a storm to popular Nepalese tunes. This cultural enrichment was particularly valuable to the students involved, as well as the Program Coordinators.
Hilda, Tegan and Alesha excelled in their roles, not only in promoting the weekly activities, but also in engaging with the ACU International community. They have provided valuable feedback to help expand the program in 2020 and we are very grateful for their contributions. We are excited to see how this program will expand in 2020 and look forward to welcoming new community engagement students who will coordinate the program in the new year.
