url_urlIconPickerThe URL tool enables you to create a link to a website from within your LEO unit.

URL links in your units may be useful for:

  • Directing the user to a website or a document hosted online.
  • Referring students to websites that may be relevant to their studies or for linking to guides or policies.
  • Linking to reading materials in online repositories.

URL is an acronym for "Uniform Resource Locator", which is the technical term for a web address. An example of a URL is http://leo.acu.edu.au. You can find the URL for any page you are on by looking at the address bar in your browser:

How to add a URL to your LEO unit

To create a URL resource, you will need to first know the web address you want to link to. The easiest way is to navigate to the online resource and copy it from the address bar in your web browser.

  1. Navigate to your LEO unit.
  2. Click the Turn editing on button.
  3. In the unit section where you want to add the link, click the Add an activity or resource link and click the URL resource.
  4. You will need to give your URL a name. This name will be the link that users will click to open the web address.
  5. Type in or copy and paste the web address into the External URL field.
  6. Click the Save and return to unit button to finish.

You should now see your new URL link in the unit. Students may now click this link to open the link their web browser.

The optional settings for the URL activity are explored in more detail in the Other URL settings section below.

You can also use the text editor to add links in content you create using tools such as the Page, Book or Label resources. To learn more, please see LEO Guides: How to add a link into the Text Editor.

The URL tool offers some flexibility as to how your links will be displayed. The settings which are unique to the URL are explored in more detail below.

Display URL description

This option is only relevant if you have entered a description for your URL. For example, in the description you may like to put a reason why you have included this URL in your LEO unit, and what you would like your students to do with the content.

Display options

By default, new URL links in LEO units will open in a new browser tab or window when users click them. It is strongly recommended that this setting not be changed, as the default New window option is the most useful when dealing with various browsers and devices.

The Display option under the Appearance setting section allows you to change the behaviour of how the URL link opens. The options available are:

  • Automatic - The best display option for the URL will be selected automatically.
  • Embed - The URL will be displayed in the page within LEO, below the navigation bar together with the URL description and any blocks.
  • New window - default option. The URL will be displayed in a new browser window with both menus and an address bar.
  • Open - Only the URL will be displayed in the browser window.
  • In pop-up - The URL will open in a new browser window without menus or an address bar. The size of this pop-up window is determined by the size settings that appear when this option is selected.

URL Variables

The options available under the URL Variables heading are recommended for use only by advanced LEO users.
