Some possible uses of the Choice activity may include:

  • Asking your students to gauge their confidence at how they are progressing through the unit's materials.
  • Kick-starting a discussion in class (or prior to class) with a challenging question.
  • Polling your students on which topic they want to review prior to the final examination or assignment.
  • Keeping track of changing responses to contentious or critical issues as the semester progresses.

Results may be published after students have answered, beyond a certain date, or not at all. Results may be published with student names or anonymously (though lecturers always see student names and their responses).

  2. In the Options settings section, define the choices that students may choose from. You may also customise how students can interact with the activity when choosing options.

See more information about the available activity settings in the sections below.

Options settings

Allow choice to be updated: If you select "Yes" for this option, your students will be able to go back into the activity and change the response they have given. This option is useful for gauging your students' understanding of a topic throughout the semester.

Allow more than one choice to be selected: If you select "Yes" for this option, your students will be able to select more than one choice from the options provided.

Limit the number of responses allowed: If you select "Yes" for this option, you can limit the amount of students who are able to select from each option given. When the limit is reached for any of the options given, then no more students will be able to make that selection. You can set the limit for each response next to "Limit 1", "Limit 2" etc.

Results settings

Publish results: By default, results are not shown to students. The alternatives you may choose are:

  • Show results to students after they answer
  • Show results to students only after the choice is closed
  • Always show results to students.

Privacy of results: This setting only becomes available when any one of the alternative Publish results options is chosen. The options are:

  • Publish anonymous results, do not show student names
  • Publish full results, showing names and their choice.

Show column for unanswered: Selecting "Yes" for this option means that when you download your data, an additional column will be added for the unanswered responses.

Include answers from inactive/suspended users: Selecting "Yes" for this option means that all of your unit's users will be included in the responses, including those who may have been removed from your unit because they have withdrawn or been removed.

Availability settings

In this section you can specify the time the activity opens and closes. You can also show a preview of the activity, which allows students to see the question but not answer it until it opens.

How to view the results

  1. Click the Choice activity in your LEO unit.
  2. Click the "View X Responses" link on the right (where "X" is the number of responses to the activity).

Note: By default, students cannot view these results. If you wish to make the results visible to students, you must change the Publish results option in the activity settings to show results to students.

  1. Follow the instructions above to view the results of your Choice activity.
  2. Below the table, click one of the following options:
    1. Download in ODS format
    2. Download in Excel format
    3. Download in text format
  3. Save the file to your computer when prompted.

Case Study: Integrating an educational 3D game in Moodle

In this case study, the authors discuss how they designed an prototype of a learning activity activity titled 'ADVENTURES IN MATHEMTICS'; which in practice was an integration between the game Never Winter Nights, and the Learning Platform Moodle. The objective of their integrated learning activity was "[t]o complete an adventure in a sword-and-sorcery environment by cooperatively solving a set of problems to continue the adventure, with the support of an LMS" (2007, 407).

One of the examples given for this integration was of setting up a Choice activity within their Moodle unit; this Choice activity sets out the parameters of a discussion the student could have with a character within the game. The student interacts with the character via the Never Winter Nights game engine, but their answers were fed into, and their data was stored within Moodle (2007, 406).

Interactions within this learning environment included peer-to-peer, teacher to student, student to computer. The environment was designed for the purposes of enhancing both motivation, and a sense of community, within their student cohort.
