You must always launch Kaltura Capture by logging into LEO and using the Dashboard > My Media > Add New > Kaltura Capture method. If you open the application directly from your computer instead of launching it through My Media you will get errors when trying to upload to Kaltura.

Launch Kaltura Capture

  1. In the Navigation Panel in LEO select Dashboard > My Media.
  2. On the My Media page, select Add New > Kaltura Capture.

  3. If it is your first time using Kaltura Capture, it needs to be installed on your computer:
    1. Under the heading Using Kaltura Capture for the first time?, select the Download button that matches your computer (i.e., "Download for Windows" or "Download for Mac").

    2. Run the installer you downloaded and follow the prompts to install the software on your computer.
    3. Repeat Steps 1 and 2 - this will link your My Media page in LEO with the Kaltura Capture application installed on your computer.
  4. If you completed Step 3 before, Step 2 will launch the Kaltura Capture application on your computer.

Please note: if you have already installed Kaltura Capture and it does not launch, it may need to be updated. Download and run the installer and try launching Kaltura Capture again.

Making new recordings requires an understanding of the Kaltura Capture settings, as well as taking some time to experiment and make new recordings to learn how each input source is recorded. Making a new recording requires 3 main steps:

1. Prepare your presentation materials

Before you start any recording it is good to ensure you first have your audio script available, plus the applications or web sites open that you wish to use while making your recording, so that you can move between these resources quickly.

2. Set your input sources

When Kaltura Capture loads you should see the Recording Tool, which allows you to select the sources of video and audio that you want to record.

Configure your input sources

For each of the Screen, Camera and Audio options, you can click the 'arrow' to expand the input options panel, which allows you choose the source:

  • For Screen, you can select a monitor to record, and select an area of the screen, if you wish.
  • For the Camera, you can choose from webcams or other cameras connected to your computer
  • For the Audio, you can choose between mics, such as computer microphone or a headset.

Enable and disable your input sources

You can click the icon for the source to disable it, meaning it will not be part of the recording you make. You can click a disabled source to enable it. An enabled source is blue (see image above), whereas a disabled source is grey icon with a line through it (see image right).

Kaltura Capture will record all sources that are enabled when you start recording. You cannot enable or disable sources while recording.

3. Make your new recording

  1. Launch Kaltura Capture through the My Media > Add New > Kaltura Capture button.
  2. Enable and configure the sources you want to record, and disable those which you do not want to record.
  3. Click the red 'Record' button to start recording. When the countdown finishes, recording will commence.
  4. Run your presentation. When finished, click the 'Stop' button (grey square icon) in the mini control:

  5. In the Kaltura Capture application, give your recording a Name, Description, and Tags, then click the 'Save and Upload' button to save the video to your My Media library in LEO.

Useful tips

Mini-control functions: While recording, you can also Pause and Resume by clicking the red 'Record' button to toggle on and off. You can also Cancel the recording by click the 'x' button. You can also Live Draw on the screen using the whiteboard tools by clicking the 'Pencil' icon and selecting from the drawing tools and colour palette options.

Save and upload later: Instead of uploading your video straight away, you can instead choose the 'Save' option. You can select this video from your Kaltura Capture library and choose to upload it later.

Editing your videos: Kaltura Capture does not have built-in editing functions. If you need to edit your video after recording, Save and Upload to My Media, then use the Kaltura Video Editor to edit your video.

By enabling and disabling certain sources to record, and depending on what you're presenting on the screen or via the webcam, you can create different types of recordings. These are a few different popular types and how you would achieve them.

Technical / Visual / Slideshow Presentation

If you want to explain visually how to do something on-screen, enable the Screen and Audio options, and disable the Camera option. While recording, you can demonstrate how to perform the actions on your screen while speaking and explaining the processes you're performing. This can be useful for showing how to navigate a website or use a computer application, and you can also record a PowerPoint presentation using this method. While recording, open your PowerPoint presentation as a full-screen slideshow and speak to each slide as you would if you were presenting in-class.

Talking Head

Another popular media type used is the "talking head" style video, which is the presenter speaking directly into camera and discussing a topic or explaining a process or idea. This can be done by enabling the Camera and Audio options, and disabling the Screen option.

Combined Presenter and Presentation (Picture in Picture)

If you enable all three input types during recording, viewers will be able to switch between the camera and screen as the main and "picture in picture" display, as in this example:

Note: this display is only possible if the video is embedded in the Text Editor using the Embed Kaltura Media button. Using the "Share" code for the video will not enable this interactive display.


A podcast is an audio-only recording. Enable the Audio source and disable the Screen and Camera sources. An audio-only piece of media is embedded in the text editor just as a video is, however just shows a black screen with a title.

You can also click the 'Manage' link in the Recording tool to open your Library: 

The Library

Cap library

Click the 'Folder' icon in the left menu to view your Library. The Library shows a list of the videos you've created in Kaltura Capture, which are stored on this computer.

  • Click the 'Upload' button to upload previously saved but not uploaded videos in the list.
  • Click the 'Delete' link for any list item to remove it from your computer.
  • Click the 'Thumbnail' of the video in the list to watch the recording.  


Cap settings

Click the 'Settings' icon in the left menu to view application settings, such as:

  • Recording quality: you can adjust the quality of the screen and camera recording (a higher settings will record better video quality but at an increased file size).
  • Interface options: you can choose other options, such as whether to record your computer audio, and whether you want to highlight the cursor on the screen as you're recording.

Remember to click the 'Save' button after adjusting your settings to save your changes.
