  1. Why should I complete the Student Evaluation of Learning and Teaching (SELT) surveys?
This is your opportunity to make your voice heard on important processes, and ultimately improve the quality of your learning at ACU and also that of future students. Student feedback collected through SELT surveys helps your lecturers and tutors improve their teaching and the unit. It is also important for the review and accreditation of courses at ACU, and supporting promotion processes of lecturers.
  2. Other benefits for students?
Currently, students who complete all of their SELT surveys for the standard study periods (semester 1 or semester 2) can access their results a day before other students. Students are sent an email with a link to their results. For the exact date and times of the Early Result Release please see the notifications in the student portal each semester. Early access to grades depends on: completing all SELT surveys for units, the lecturer in charge entering the unit grades on the relevant system on or before the relevant date and other circumstances that may delay getting access to the results (e.g. unpaid fees, results requiring further review) being applicable to you.
  3. How do I complete a SELT survey via LEO?
See more information on how to complete a SELT survey via LEO.
  4. Will my lecturer know if I completed the evaluation?
No. Academic staff members do not have access to such information at any time. They can view real time response rates for their units while evaluations are live. The SELT surveys are administered centrally through the Centre for Education and Innovation (CEI). CEI is a central area of the university that reports to the Provost.
  5. Can I be sure that my comments are anonymous?
Your feedback is stored in a database and only anonymous and aggregated information is included in the survey reports. Written comments are listed for the whole group, without indicating who provided them. A survey report is generated if at least five (5) students have completed the survey. These strategies help to ensure anonymity.

  6. If my lecturer does not know that I've completed my evaluation, how am I able to receive reminders?
The online evaluation system has many sections and each area has a particular function. One area stores information for creating SELT surveys (including student, staff and unit details), another stores all survey responses and there are areas for various reports. As soon as a student responds to a particular survey, the system automatically removes their name from the list for the class, and adds the student's feedback to a pool of responses for the unit.
The system sends reminders to non-responders on a pre-defined schedule. These reminders are 'personalised' by using student names which are populated automatically by referencing the class list within Banner (ACU's student information management system). At no time does any faculty or school staff member have access to details stored in the online evaluation database. The lecturers and tutors can only view the reports that are generated by the system.
  7. I am in a course with more than one lecturer. Do I have to complete an entire evaluation form for every lecturer?
Ideally, we would appreciate your feedback on every lecturer and tutor who has the responsibility to facilitate your learning, and whose teaching you have experienced. The SELT surveys have unit-specific questions and teacher-specific questions. Students answer the unit-specific questions once. They then have the option of selecting the teachers (lecturers/tutors) from a list and can complete the teacher-specific question for each teacher.
  8. I completed my evaluations. Why am I still receiving reminders?
Reminders are sent to students with any incomplete surveys, including students who may have completed their survey but not submitted it.  Please log in to LEO to view your Evaluations-Tasks block and confirm that you have submitted all of your SELT surveys. You will continue to receive reminders until all of your evaluations are submitted. A sure way to avoid email reminders is to complete the surveys! See more information on how to complete a SELT survey via LEO
  9. I do not see an evaluation for one of my units, what should I do?
SELT surveys are only conducted for units listed on Banner with at least 10 enrolled students. Your unit may have less than 10 students. Also, unit evaluations are released at different times, depending on the teaching period. Links to the surveys will appear on LEO when they are activated. Please contact the Evaluations team (Evaluations.CEI@acu.edu.au) if you have any questions about the invitation(s) you have received.

  10. I am in a unit with less than 10 students enrolled in it, and I would still like to provide feedback.
Units with 10 or less students are not included in the SELT survey process. Students in these units may still want to provide feedback about their experience. If students wish to provide informal feedback, they should complete the ad-hoc feedback form.
  11. Who will read these evaluation results?
Teachers (lecturer/tutor), National Heads of School (or equivalent), Associate Deans (Learning and Teaching) (or equivalent), Executive Dean and authorised high-level ACU committees will have access to all survey reports in a summary form for their respective areas. Each report will include a summary of aggregated data and a list of all comments, without identifying individual students to help inform decision making and improvement of the student experience.
  12. Will students be able to see any of the evaluation results?
The lecturer in charge of a unit is responsible for sharing through the unit outline what students have said in previous surveys, and indicate any actions that resulted from the feedback. Each lecturer/tutor is strongly encouraged by the university to discuss how student feedback has been used in their teaching to improve the learning experience for students.
  13. What can I do if I missed the course evaluation deadline?
Evaluations cannot be completed after the survey period has closed and the deadline will not be extended. However, your feedback in the next round of surveys will be very much appreciated.

  14. What kind of feedback can I provide in the comments section?
Students provide valuable feedback on a range of areas in relation to learning and teaching in their units. You may wish to comment on the timing and content of assessments, the structure of tutorials, the online resources provided or the amount of required reading. You may also want to suggest ideas for improving the unit. Please ensure that whatever comments you make are constructive.
  15. What do my teachers do with the feedback I give them?
Along with other important information for the unit, your teachers use your feedback to reflect on their teaching practice and to improve the unit for future students. Your comments can prompt them to undertake professional training to develop their teaching skills and review the unit to improve learning outcomes for students. ACU staff teaching in units are required to report on their teaching activities to their supervisors, as part of the annual performance review and planning process.
  16. How can I get more help on evaluations? How can I have my say about the way the evaluation system is developed?
Contact Evaluations.CEI@acu.edu.au for any enquiries or to provide feedback about the evaluation system.
