This commitment is led by our Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Zlatko Skrbis. His leadership advocates strong community engagement, education and employment outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Forming strategic partnerships with community

Our commitment to being a leading-practice employer for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples is guided in a practical way by the ACU Mission.

Our Statement of Commitment to Reconciliation was formally endorsed by the Australian Catholic University Senate in 1998. To further progress ACU’s reconciliation journey, the ACU Reconciliation Action Plan (Innovate) was launched in 2019 and supports enabling a broader change agenda that empowers Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples Employment Strategy is a key driver for employment and building cultural capability across ACU.

The strategy includes a range of proactive recruitment initiatives and cultural supports for Indigenous and non-Indigenous staff members. ACU aims to increase the participation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff at all levels of the University across academic and professional streams and to support staff members to reach their full potential.

Extensive consultation and collaboration on our initiatives is undertaken with local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and the University’s Indigenous Higher Education Units (IHEUs).
